8 Reasons Summer Vacays are Different From Hockey Trips

It is that time of year again. The weather is warm, like an oven some places (Arizona), and like a sauna in others (The South) but it all means the same thing...summer vacay! Whether you are soaking up the humidity where you are or escaping the fiery depths of hell like us, a summer vacation is like no other trip a hockey family takes during the regular season. 

Hockey trips are a special breed. Full of rules and deadlines, curfews, and plenty of "no's" but a summer vacation? Let's break some rules.

1) Packing for a summer vacation is different. Gone are the hoodies, beanies, mittens and jeans and hello to sandals, dresses, shorts and fabrics that breathe! And no sticks, pads, bags and other space suckers to fill up your car or worse yet, eat up your luggage limit when flying. Even hockey swag need not apply. We leave the logos behind...

2) Put your toes in the sand, in a lake, on some grass but not on ice. Leave socks, boots at home where they belong, unless you are going somewhere cooler but I am not sure why you would do that! 

3) Bedtime, schmedtime! That coach mandated curfew does not apply on summer vacation, and I demand that you to stay up late, take in the moon, and breathe in that air that only summer and a rink-free existence can provide. 

4) Food is fresh, not fast, and certainly not concession, unless you are eating a hot dog at a ballgame or amusement park. Enjoy the seasonal flavors wherever you are, fish on the coasts, corn on the cob, and watermelon.

5) Let your nails grow since you are not going to be biting them until next season. Hopefully your tryouts are over and you can watch the tips of your nails grow PAST your fingers for a couple of months. Don't worry, be happy (and warm). 

6) Slow down. All the hockey moms I know keep insane schedules between practices, camps, parties and get togethers, school and that little thing called work. Put the planner in a drawer and avoid watching the clock, there is plenty of time for that in the fall. 

7) Interact with your OWN kids and ONLY your kids. A team full of kids can wear you down and out, particularly if you are a travel chaperone or locker mom. Take the time to just deal with yours.

8) Have conversation that doesn't start with "Ok, tell me about that game." It's time to explore your other interests (I know you guys have some!) Books, movies, video games, the news, why is Thor is hotter than Captain America....Anything but hockey. Just try.

It will not be long before we all have to head back to the rink so enjoy the time you have! Unless you are summer hockey camp parent, but we will address that next time..
