Welcome To My Blog!

Being a hockey mom just BEGS to be written about so when my daughter strapped on the goalie pads, I picked up the pen. Since then I have been blogging rink-to-rink keeping the world of youth hockey real AND real funny.

Through the highs, the lows, and the all-consuming hockey stink, us parents need to stick together!

The Power of The Hockey Mom Playlist

The Power of The Hockey Mom Playlist

Music has power. The power to bring us up, bring us down, make us think, make us dance and overall just make us feel GOOD. Back in the day you would create a mix tape of songs that fully realized what you were thinking, feeling or doing at that moment in time.

Now you have the playlist. Like a mix tape only digital and considerably easier to compile.

People have playlists for everything. Working out. Tuning Out. Meditation. Vacation. Partying Out and making out (as Vic Damone says "when it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side 1 of Led Zeppelin IV")

I even know of an author who creates a playlist for every book that she writes that feels true to character so you can always be in the right mindset to work on that novel...and she never uses the same song twice!

Hockey players have playlists too. You've heard them in the locker room, on the way to practice, or a game. For the years my daughter played with mostly boys, the playlists were mostly rock. A LOT of AC/DC. Now that she is playing with mostly girls, the playlists for the majority of the team include more current hits.

Some of it is not necessarily what I would consider pump up music, but to each her own!

I think hockey moms should have a playlist too. One that truly reflects the moods, challenges and exaltation of being a hockey mom.

With that, I give you Hockey Mom Moods. Created on my Spotify and sadly not on a cassette (I actually miss them a little) this playlist is a general representation of what we go through, feel and do as parents of players.

Feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments!

For the ladies that use this beverage to keep the stress at bay...

Red, red wine you make me feel so fine, you keep me rocking all of the time
— Red, Red Wine (UB40)

An ode to the almighty dollar and why hockey moms may drink that wine to begin with...

Money, don’t get everything it’s true.
What it don’t get, I can’t use.

Now give me money (that’s what I want)
That’s what I want (that’s what I want)
— Money (The Beatles)

Running that crazy schedule for 8+ months...

I know I can’t slow down
I can’t hold back though you know I wish I could
No there ain’t no rest for the wicked
Until we close our eyes for good
— Ain't No Rest for the Wicked (Cage The Elephant)

For those standing outside the locker room patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for their player to FINALLY emerge...

But you keep-a me waiting
All of the time
What can I do?

’Cause I’m so tired
Tired of waiting for you
— Tired Of Waiting For You (The Kinks)

The losing battle against hockey bag stink. I realize this song is about drugs and alcohol abuse but the chorus works so well here...

Ooooh that smell
Can’t you smell that smell?
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
— That Smell (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

And for every goalie mom facing a tight game or hockey gods forbid, a shootout...

It’s the terror of knowing
What the world is about
Watching some good friends
Screaming

’LET ME OUT’
— Under Pressure (David Bowie/Queen)

For all those tournament weekends that seem to go on forever...

Twenty twenty twenty four hours to go
I wanna be sedated

Nothing to do,
nowhere to go, o
I wanna be sedated
— I Wanna Be Sedated (The Ramones)

And for those big wins, you have to go with the classic...

We are the champions, my friends
And we’ll keep on fighting ‘till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
’Cause we are the champions of the world
— We Are The Champions (Queen)
