My name is Sharon Enck and welcome to my rink, where the seasons are long, and the stories are endless!

Being a hockey mom just BEGS to be written about so when my daughter strapped on the goalie pads, I picked up the pen. Since then I have been blogging rink-to-rink keeping the world of youth hockey real AND real funny.

Through the highs, the lows, and the all-consuming hockey stink, us parents need to stick together!

Being a Goalie Mom is Like a Trip to the Dentist

Being a Goalie Mom is Like a Trip to the Dentist

Sometimes you just have too much time to think. Like waiting for your dentist appt..which is overdue. Somewhat of an anxiety inducing event.

Kind of like being a goalie's mom.

There's a lot of similarities so while waiting for that inevitable gums and flossing discussion, I pondered them. First off..

It's not what you thought you signed up for. At least if you are like me. A goalie? She'll be so cute in all those pads..I need a crown? Oh, that doesn't sound too bad.

It's painful. Shootouts feel like root canals. Penalty shots feel like teeth scraping and those close all important playoff games? It's like that numb feeling you get after the procedure when you are drooling, can't talk right and have a wad of cotton wedged in your mouth.

It's expensive. Both hockey and dentist fees are only an estimate and what you are paying for is never permanent. That crown is going to cost you far more after they drill and the pads, skates, sticks and chest protector are like a crown that needs to be replaced because you won't stop chewing gum.

It's time consuming. There's no such thing as a "quick" visit to the dentist and there's no such as a "short" season in hockey.

Someone's always bossing you around. The dentist wants you to floss more and the coach wants you to say yes to that extra game, extra private lessons or that extra out-of-state trip. What's just one more?

You are always glad that you did it afterwards. Nothing feels like that freshly cleaned mouth..except for the smile on your goalie's face after a shutout. So worth it.

The doctor is calling me in now. At least HE takes insurance..
