Welcome To My Blog!

Being a hockey mom just BEGS to be written about so when my daughter strapped on the goalie pads, I picked up the pen. Since then I have been blogging rink-to-rink keeping the world of youth hockey real AND real funny.

Through the highs, the lows, and the all-consuming hockey stink, us parents need to stick together!

Chaos and Mayhem..It's the Team Photo!

Chaos and Mayhem..It's the Team Photo!

It's a rite of passage, the team photo. Nearly every year we've been subjected to the ever-so-challenging task of grouping kids on the ice, organized JUST SO for the photographic evidence that we existed.

And yes it is as painful as it sounds. Why? Well think of it this way...take your family photo experience and multiply it by 10. Yeah, it's that fun.

No one on the team understands our desire to do this. No one understands why we need a picture of their smiling, sweaty, faces. And no one understands that they need to STAND or SIT STILL. Add sticks, gloves and helmets in to the mix and it's a free for all of arms, legs and potentially dangerous projectiles.

This year we had the bright idea of not only doing individual photos and the traditional group on the ice but also to do a post-practice avant garde sepia toned locker room photo. Sounds fancy right?

Did the pics look cool in the portfolio book? Yes. Did it seem like a very different take on that traditional team photo? Yes. Was it a nightmare? Yes.

First of all if you want to be a sports photographer taking pictures of amped up 12 year olds you better be aggressive. Quiet, calm and reasonable are not the personality traits to get this puppy done. It's a take-no-prisoners type of approached that needs to be employed. You know It's a bad sign when you have to call in the teacher hockey mom with the "scary" voice in to get try and get everyone in line.

And speaking of lines...there were none. This was a "free form" kind of effort with everyone in different positions and no real order to it. That's what makes the photo cool, and horrible all at the same time.

What does THIS look like to you? Looks like a bunch of kids who have no idea what the heck they are doing. And a blur of a mom who is doing her best to wrangle them in.

And there I am, pissed, because once again my daughter is positioned in the traditional 2 pad stack pose. Have I mentioned how much I HATE that photo position? The promo book showed goalies kneeling or in butterfly...but I digress.

This one isn't much better. Notice the same kid in the back with his hand to his head in both pics? You know why he is doing that? Because he's just as confused as the rest of us!

Ok now I realize we will probably get this picture (because you know I forked over the cash to get it) and I am going to love the end result....just like I do with every team picture.

Ok maybe not this one. Yes this really happened. They told her to smile big. Big, she went.

Stay tuned for the end result and here's to many more years of the team photo. We've got the wall space!
